Heard It Here First
I'm
here to talk about six teams that are going
to disrupt the preseason rankings and surprise
the hell out of the big time teams and conferences
everywhere. Memphis, Wisconsin,
Kansas State, Auburn, Maryland
and Texas might not be on anybody's
top five lists, most won't even crack the
top 10, with one that won't even start out
the season in the top 25. But don't hesitate
to put your money on these six squads. Anyone
can tell you that Oklahoma, USC,
Miami, and FSU are going to
win games, but with spreads that stretch
over five touchdowns, where's the money
in that? Listen closely, and stack the odds
in your favor. Bet on these teams to win
and you won't catch yourself kicking your
TV off its stand because Oklahoma
didn't beat Texas A&M
by the 42 point spread.
(Rankings are from the Associated Press
as of September 2)

Memphis
(Unranked)
I'm not here to tell you that Memphis is
going to break out of Conference USA and
bust down the doors into a National Championship,
but they're going to win a bunch of games,
and possibly climb their way up the AP and
into the top ten. There are many signs that
point to Memphis stepping up in a huge way,
and it all starts with stud quarterback
Danny Wimprine. This senior out played number
one draft pick Eli Manning in their head
to head matches last season when Memphis
season opener with an upset of Ole Miss.
In that game Wimprine had everyone wondering
who he was. Now everyone knows. Now he's
a senior. Now he's better. Danny's favorite
target, Maurice Avery was in his first year
at wide receiver last year and there's no
doubt in my mind that he will grow into
his new position in his second full season
at receiver. He had 49 catches and 8 touchdowns
last season. DeAngleo Williams is a star
running back already, producing 10 consecutive
100-yard games last season. Did I mention
they bring back every offensive starter
from last year's team that finished 9-4?
As if their offense didn't have enough firepower
to propel them into the top ten, they bring
back a defense that didn't give up more
than 24 points in their last 10 games. With
four juniors and four seniors starting defensively,
a strong defense will be even stingier.
Follow Memphis up the AP poll, and profit
from their success.
